Why in News?

In a first-of-its-kind joint space mission, the European Space Agency and the China National Space Administration are launching the SMILE Mission on 19 May aboard Europe's Vega-C rocket

About SMILE Mission

  • It is a joint mission of the European Space Agency and China National Space Administration to study interactions between solar wind and Earth's magnetosphere.
  • It will capture the first-ever X-ray images of Earth's magnetosphere, showing how Earth's magnetic shield deflects harmful charged particles from the Sun.
  • The mission aims to improve understanding of space weather phenomena such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and auroras.
  • SMILE will be positioned about 1.21 lakh km above Earth's North Pole and has an expected mission life of around three years.
  • It carries four scientific instruments—Soft X-ray Imager (SXI), Magnetometer, Light Ion Analyser (LIA), and Ultraviolet Imager (UVI)—to conduct both remote sensing and in-situ observations.
  • The mission can improve early warning systems for solar storms, helping protect satellites, GPS, communication networks, power grids, and astronaut safety.
